Refurbished Exeter College Library reopens to students
16th October 2023
Exeter College is thrilled to announce that after just over a year of renovation work, our refurbished Library is now open again for student use.
The Library is now fully accessible, with a lift that services all floors, step-free entrance and a wheelchair accessible toilet. The lighting, electrics, ventilation, and environmental performance of the building have all been significantly improved. There are also more reader spaces, with every desk fitted with electric plugs and lights for each person and the option to raise or lower some desks electronically. The Library’s Victorian Gothic architecture has been preserved and restored to its original splendour. The original stonework, woodwork and oak bookcases have been restored, and where there is new woodwork, such as in the new mezzanine floor in the annexe, outstanding craftsmanship has ensured that it is of the highest quality throughout.
Though the Library only reopened to students today, it is already being put to good use, with students keen to visit and utilise the improved learning space. The Library will be open 24/7, except for a brief closure at Christmas.
We are looking forward to holding an official opening ceremony in May 2024, to which all alumni and friends of the College who have made a gift in support of the restoration project will be invited. You can still make a gift towards the cost of the refurbishment here.
